Above is Sony’s teaser video for their giant-looking tablets. Sony, the company that sues makers, hackers and innovators (which are usually associated with actually building Rube Goldberg Machines) thinks a video like this will drive demand. I don’t think it will. This caught my eye for two reasons. 1) Sony wants to be clever and show a cool thing like a Rube Goldberg Machine, but Sony has historically shown they’re completely against that type of thinking and playfulness. And 2) Really? Another Rube Goldberg Machine video? It’s been done over and over by phone companies and car companies, stop it already. I know ad agencies love to pitch this ideas but you don’t need to do them.
And a tablet? Ask Samsung and RIM how their “tablet” sales are doing. Besides, we all know it’s going to have some weird proprietary memory stick duo pro plus SD extreme card UMD thing right?

My tablet, however, was manufactured by Samsung, thank you very much.
i like android, i think sony has an uphill battle with releasing yet-another-android tablet. i’m going to predict that they’ll discontinue any tablet released in less than 1 year. i’m also going to say the rim playbook will not be around next year too. however, i think we’re going to see more rube goldberg ads.

I thought the train on the track was cheating. What is it, battery powered? I like my Rube Goldberg machines to be purely mechanical.
Having it cast the shadows was a nice touch, though.
That has to be the slowest and most lifeless Rube Goldberg machine ever… which I guess is fitting for Sony. So, well done?
A Rube Goldberg device

Not much of a rube goldberg though, and definitely WAY too slow.

Come on, re-read your post. It’s obvious you hate Sony and you are completely biased.
Oh, and you are totally ignoring the fact that Sony is a company built by engineers and scientists. They’ve pioneered a lot of the technology you use today even in your own making activities. Just because they sued someone to protect their IP doesn’t make them any less a group of makers.

I just read the article – I think on quite a few points there is another side to the story (Aibo had an SDK in Japan, region coding is enforced because companies are legally required to, and exploits like mod-chips and the piggy-backed other-OS boot loader that let you play copies hurts content producers like you and me, etc.). Other than that this is all in America from Sony America. The Sony you have issues with and the Sony I see here in Japan appear to be very different entities.

Sounds like “we were there before you”… and I don’t like that way, honestly.
I don’t like Sony policy too (like many other big companies) but this article has been somewhat biased by your view about Sony.

Most boring Rube Goldberg machine, I think I have ever seen. Nothing really happens, 70%+ is just that train moving. The light effects are cool I guess.
And apple sucks too.
