I’ve been waiting for a touchscreen placemat for some time now. Microsoft’s surface was/is a cool technology, but what we really need is something that’s basically an extra large tablet you wouldn’t feel bad about spilling your coffee on. The folks at SKR Technology have a prototype touch system that’s getting closer to this reality. Their touchscreen runs custom Android drivers and mirrors Android across a 32-inch screen. I don’t get it… these Android phones just keep getting bigger and bigger. Imagine how silly this guy will look holding that thing up to his ear. Also, we’re gonna need bigger cargo pants.

This just proves what I have thought since I saw the Sharp Zaurus, years ago. This distinction between mobile and desktop devices is silly and counterproductive. See, now so called mobile OSs are being run on hardware scaled up to desktop size!
I like Android but I would much rather see a software stack take off that is based on Linux and a cut down version of X with GTK and QT libraries as well as any others someone wants to install. Basically a plain old Linux distro but with a more mobile oriented “desktop environment”.
Think how easy it would be to port apps between the phone and the computer! It would just be a matter of rearranging the gui a bit. I suppose you might want to cut some features out of the mobile version too for memory issues but I’m not even sure about that. My cellphone has as much memory as my computer did not that long ago!
If one isn’t concerned so much about storage space apps might not need ported at all. They could just detect the screen size and maybe the presence/lack of a mouse pointer and run in one of two modes based on that.
Take that idea another step and you could just plug your phone into a docking station and it instantly is a desktop. When you are ready to leave just unplug and go! Why isn’t development headed in that direction?!?!
GPE was a great example of what I am talking about. Unfortunately it came about a little too late to make it big in the PDA market and a bit too early for the phone market. I don’t think it’s been worked on in a while and now it’s very dated. Opie/Qtopia was ok too but since it really only used QT and not X you couldn’t easily port anything but Qt apps to it.
is this a joke or what how would a person carry so big LCD with him/her and wonder what are they gonna do with it?
