Maker Event in Detroit: Memory Cloud

Memory Cloud: Detroit (September 30th – October 2nd, 2011
8:00 pm – 10:00 pm nightly) is a project developed for the Detroit Institute of Arts by the experimental architecture and design studio Minimaforms. Artificial atmospheres inspired by the ancient practice of visual communication called smoke signals will become carriers of stories and messages that have been contributed by the people of Detroit for the people of Detroit over the three night performance. Memory Cloud: Detroit will over a two week period leading up to the event ask participants to express themselves and engage in a conversation with their city. Participants will be able to contribute their stories online at www.voiceofdetroit.com and by text message at the event. These collected messages will be added to the Voice of Detroit archive, becoming part of an evolving diary and a voice that will speak of Detroit’s past, Detroit’s present and Detroit’s future.

Minimaforms, an experimental architecture and design studio founded by Theodore and Stephen Spyropoulos, has staged performances around the world. Their work is currently on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the exhibition “Talk to Me,” concerning design and communication.
