Boston Dynamic’s PETMAN Robot

Robotics

It’s not every day you get to see a demonstration of something that previously only existed in works of fiction. I’m sure we’ve all seen the clunky video of highly stylized humanoid robots like the Asimo or the eerily visceral quadruped Big Dog. Nothing will prepare you for the life like movements of Boston Dynamic’s PETMAN. The closest approximation would be the CGI animations of the robots from the 2004 blockbuster ‘I, Robot.’ [via /.]

    Wow and yikes!

How foolish of me to think that BigDog was where it was at!

    Love the flashing ‘head’.   :)

I want to see it walking the BigDog!

Welcome to our new robot overlords!

  3. Halfvast Conspirator says:

That is creepy.  It would be better if it whacked the guy back when he tried to push it over.

I’d like to know if you can input motion data from Miku Miku Dance and get it to dance to music.

  5. Joe Bowers says:

I hope it gets used for more than testing clothing in chemical warfare.
Seeing this video made a nerdy tear trickle down my cheek!

  6. Matt Arrell says:

I wonder if those two wires are keeping it up, or just guides should it fall. I would be interested to see if it can move and stand and walk on its own yet. Either way, this is probably the most impressive thing I have seen in a long, long time.

The tether is only there to provide hydraulic power, not to keep it up or “rescue” it from falls. However they are planning to make the robot tetherless, that is to say, have it’s own power utility. :)
