We’re giving away amazing kits from our new Make: Ultimate Kit Guide EVERY DAY — thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, including MakerBots!
To celebrate the release of our latest publication, the Make: Ultimate Kit Guide 2012 (and its companion website), we’re giving away at least one of the cool kits reviewed in the issue each day during the holiday season.
Today’s kit giveaway of the Learn to Solder Skill Badge may not be as glorious as some of the other items but we’re giving you 25 of them! In addition, we are throwing in a Variable Temperature Soldering Iron so you and 24 friends can learn to solder together.
It’s the perfect giveaway for hackerspaces, schools, or people that really like things that blink (a $79.99 total value.) Here is the review from the issue:
Thousands of people mastered soldering for the first time at this year’s Maker Faire events in the Maker Shed’s “Learn to Solder” tents, with the helpful coaching of Mitch Altman, Jimmie Rodgers, and dozens of other hackerspace volunteers. Participants left the Maker Shed with smiles on their faces, new skills, increased confidence, and a cool flashing LED badge to show for it. It’s the perfect gateway project kit for groups, after-school classes, or just for yourself.
To be eligible for today’s giveaway, all you have to do is leave a comment below in this post. The entry period for today’s prize will be until 11:59pm PST tonight. We’ll choose one person at random, you’ll be notified by email, and you’ll have 48 hours to respond. The Winners List is kept on the Giveaway landing page. That’s it! Still pretty cool prize.

This would be great for the soldering classes that we want to have at Make Lehigh Valley in January. Having the same soldering irons as well as a first project all provided would really help decrease the organization, appeal and clarity of the classes.
This looks great.
I don’t have a soldering iron. :(
Would love this for the kid!
Anyone leaving grad school needs their own soldering iron.
Wow! This is awexome! I’ll open up my basement lab to my friends, neighbors and family for a Learn To Solder party if I get these!! :-)

This would be perfect to teach my kids with. My 4 year old (daughter) loves tinkering with me and has been enjoying learning about electronics.
If it’s random selection, does it mean that comment should be stupid?
I can’t understand why would someone would want to give a away such expensive tool.
Oh and if i would win this, this tool will be very useful to me. All i got is this cheepy creepy tool for a 5$ :/. But you know the proverb. For a bad dancer, even a dance-shoes is a hinder.

i would love a kit! plus the soldering iron here has seen better days :)
Lets go free stuff!
Down in front!
This would be another great one for the Hackerspace.
Truly this is a life skill that everyone should know how to do. And no, I’m not very good at it. My soldering jobs conduct electricity but they are not very pretty to look at. There’s this guy I know from Old Town whose works of solder have been displayed in Art Museums across the land. People come from miles around to behold the marvelous works.
know who I can teach to solder
A great giveaway!

I could use this to brush up on my soldering skills.
I don’t think I have twenty acquaintances, let alone twenty friends! Still, my Shack iron doesn’t have anything you can call a ‘tip’ left, and every time I use it, the smells makes me fear for my house, so a new iron would be very neat!
Super sweet!
Fingers crossed!
These look like a fun way to teach the kids to solder!
This would be awesome to teach my little sisters and cousins
I’ll stop the world and melt with you.
If I won this, I would have to share with others who don’t know how to solder.

This is my favorite prize to date. The makerbot is pretty cool, but you can’t make a soldering iron with a makerbot (yet)! Whereas a soldering iron would be an invaluable tool in a DIY makerbot project.
Thanks once again for the opportunity.
Great idea with the solder badges
A much improved version over the RadioShack 25W I have in my kit. I use my Weller ColdHeat a lot of the time, but a variable temp would really improve the solder joints.
This would be a great addition to help us teach our boy scouts some basic soldering skills for their electronics Merit Badge.
yes!
I would like to learn how to solder very much please.
I’d love to show my friends how to solder!
What a good way to get friends interested!

Sweet giveaway! I know at least half-a-dozen people who have asked me to teach them how to solder and this would be the perfect opportunity. Getting the iron would be even cooler – I’m still using a cheap-o Radio Shack pencil iron that has seen better days. Here’s hoping!
I would love to improve my soldering skills and then teach a group of people to solder.
Yippie Kay yay. Squeeze your toes on the carpet and you will feel like Bruce Willis.

Rollin’ the dice!
Yay!
If I win, I’m going to find 12 friends and make them do it twice. As much as Id love to teach people to solder, finding that many non FB friends to come over is difficult these days. :)

Super Exciting! I’d like to win one of these!
I would love to win this My daughter made one at Detroit Makerfaire and I have girl scout troop who we have been promising them how to use real tools.

Whoa, I’ve been looking to learn to solder for my future techie based halloween costumes and Christmas decorations. And automate my chicken coop. And fix my wife’s laptop power supply. And replace some capacitors on my squealing computer monitor. Man I need to learn to solder.
I would love to win this for my son.
My son would love this!
i could totally go for a fancy new soldering iron!
ping!
How about a suggestion for the next generation of merit badges: leave a blank space on the badge so it can double as nametag.
Been meaning to learn to solder for a while!
These kits would make an awesome workshop to do with the kids at Computers4Kids (http://www.computers4kids.net/). I’ve already gotten them excited about the TV-B-Gone, but it’d be good to work up to that.
Would love to win this for my family and myself
The whole third grade could learn to solder…
i can solder
My son would love to have this to build robots with.
Well at least I’ve got lots of siblings that would like to learn to solder (and would beat eachother up for a badge like that)
This would be cool!
I would use these with my son’s class, and would keep the soldering iron for myself of course.
That’s fantastic! I’m just planning our first Mini Maker Faire, and I’d just love to win this for our learning to solder workshop. Unfortunately, I’m based in Melbourne, Australia, so I guess I won’t qualify to win the giveaway. Brilliant learners kit though A++++
The iron would alone be an amazing win, then add 25 kits to share with friends. Heck yea!
awesome
This is great!
Soldering iron? I’m not sure what I would do with one, much less 25. Of course, my friends and I could all benefit from a new hobby and a new skill…
oooo, i’ll take it!
soldering is the future.
The couple that solders together stays together.
I would love to be able to teach myself and my 10 year old daughter how to solder….What every boy and girl should be able to do…;-)
Looks awesome
Bacon!
Somehow I don’t think a new iron is going to improve my soldering skills, but I’d love to prove myself wrong. :)
