News From The Future – McDonalds Sprays You With DNA

Pt 424

News From The Future – McDonalds Sprays You With DNA Spray (if you McSteal something)… “DNA McSpray to foil thieves – McDonalds to use new anti-theft spray” @ News.com.au. That guy above took 1 extra too many nugget sauce packets!

McDONALD’S restaurants are fighting back against thieves by blasting suspected robbers with an invisible DNA spray as they attempt to flee. The spray, which remains on the suspect’s skin for two weeks and on clothes for up to six months, has been introduced in some of the chain’s busiest NSW stores, including those at Parramatta, Granville, Auburn, Lidcome, Kingsford and Wollongong, reported The Daily Telegraph. If the SelectaDNA “forensic marking” spray proves successful in apprehending bandits, McDonald’s will introduce the system across all its 780 Australian outlets.

Upon hearing the news (and getting McSprayed) The Hamburglar said “This is clearly another example of Mayor McCheese abusing his power, McDonaldland has turned in to a police state”.

On a serious note, is the total cost of theft for every McDonalds in AU that huge? This reminds me of a visit to a large company awhile ago, they developed multi-million dollar system to potentially catch a few people stealing razor blades in a drug store. It did pattern matching, profiling, costs millions, took years to develop, all for $0.39 cents of stuff. Many of these systems are looking for other buyers…

I dont get it. you still have to find the guy and test the DNA right? Wouldnt a camera be a better choice? Then at least its easier to find that person. And with all the man power that eats this seems like a terrible waste of time, resources and money.

    1. Glenn Shirley says:

They are talking about armed robbery (and banks are doing this too).  DNA combined with a fluorescent property means cops could drive round with a UV light to find the guys.  DNA makes it obvious they couldn’t have accidentally got this somehow.

    2. Anonymous says:

This is really just an adaptation of the banks’ system of dye packs.  Another step in the chain of evidence, and an effort to strengthen a criminal case.

  2. Glenn Shirley says:

You might need to go look up the word “robber” in the dictionary.  Don’t think they are talking about people stealing food.  Presumably armed robbery.

Did you even read the article before posting it. ???

my draft went live (just edited some of it) – i think cameras would be better and i’m not really sure a DNA sprayer is needed.

i agree, spraying someone in the face with anything is going to provoke violence. there has to be an intelligence deficit somewhere in McDs hierarchic.

  5. george says:

Razor blades are a favorite of organized crime-backed shoplifting rings.   They steal huge quantities of them and sell them back into the retail supply chain.

  6. Anonymous says:

Odds are they do have cameras but some smart robbers cover up identifying features. This is just another form of evidence they can use in court. It is probably a chemical “DNA” and not a organic one. Here in the U.S. a lot of self defense sprays (pepper spray, oc, mace etc.. ) have a UV dye in them to id the suspect with just one more piece of evidence instead of just what the stressed out witnesses can remember. It can also act as a big deterrent if robbers realize that they are more likely to be caught and prosecuted they will probably move on to a softer target.

  7. VRAndy says:

Suggestion to Australian crime rings :  increase noise-to-signal ration by spraying UV die on random people’s jackets.

  8. Mark Harrison says:

They are definitely talking about armed robbers. McDonalds stores are soft targets. Other after hours stores (think convenience stores and gas stations) are already hardened. McDonalds is mainly staffed by young people.

They already have to deal with some of the dumbest customers in the known universe (seriously, you should hear some of the stories my kids tell me), they really aren’t paid anywhere enough to run the risk of being involved in a traumatic armed robbery by some moron on ice that had an IQ of 20 (including the flies buzzing inside the empty cranium) BEFORE they started with ice.Having seen tweakers in action, I sure wouldn’t wish it on my kids.

Are you sure this isn’t a hoax? Sounds a bit fishy.

This is a little off topic but I am looking for a group of Makers that are also Ron Paul supporters. I don’t really mind that McDonalds is doing this, we all have a choice about eating there, but there are many similar things going on in the U.S. that are troubling. Paul seams to be a good match for the maker crowd, in general, I am hoping to find a like minded bunch.

in some places being sprayed with anything containing DNA is assault.

this system has been running in the netherlands for a couple of years.
    http://www.selectadna.co.uk/news/dutch-success-leads-to-amsterdam-retail-scheme.html

more and more stores implement it, especially after last year’s streak of jewelry stores being arm robbed and a couple of owners getting shot.
it mostly happened in areas outside of the center, where police surveillance is weaker.

to be honest with you I don’t know how many robbers they have really caught, but the spray DNA thing is proving to be a deterrent.
we’ve had 2 guys attempting to break into our office twice, once during the day with us inside.
I keep a wood bat by the door since with their names on it.
well… of course I don’t knwo their real names ;)
