“Hey, kids! Wanna learn about gravitational physics?”
“Noooo!”
“Hey, kids! Wanna play Angry Birds?”
“Yeeeeah!!!”

Well soon you’ll be able to do both with the release of Angry Birds Space, a new edition of the smash hit mobile game which sends the lovable avian critters into orbit.

Here’s astronaut (and MAKE favorite) Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station for the announcement trailer and a brief physics demo.

I, for one, have a soft spot for orbital game mechanics and look forward to developer Rovio’s take on the genre. And yes, kids, you just might learn something.

Another game that is both really good and uses orbital mechanics is Osmos. Surprisingly difficult to get used to at the visceral level, even when you know the math.

I have it on my iPhone, not sure if it’s made it onto other platforms yet.

Osmos is available for OSX, Windows, Linux, iPad (and iPhone as you said) and maybe others? I picked it up with one of the Humble Bundle game packs last year – really enjoy it.

So this is what we’re using our space station for, advertising. great.

Anything we can do to get kids to learn them some science, yes.

This is why I wasn’t too sad to see the end of the Space Shuttle program. Like it, the ISS doesn’t seem to produce much in the way of cutting edge science.
I very strongly doubt that Angry Birds in Space will be all that educational or that it will generate any kind of uptick in actual interest in science.
