Open House at NYSCI’s New Maker Space

Monday evening was the public open house for Maker Space, a new programming initiative at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens – NYSCI also happens to be where the World Maker Faire is held (including later this year on September 29 & 30 – mark your calendars!), which in turn inspired the formation of this program and space. So we here at MAKE are extremely pleased to see this program go off with a bang! Kids hacked LEDs into crafts, making glowing pinwheel flowers and electronic accessories; a MakerBot Replicator and Thing-O-Matic were on hand, which was the first encounter with 3D printing for some in attendance; there is an Activity Area; and a handful of contraptions and works of art were also on display.

With core support from Cognizant’s Making the Future initiative, Maker Space is a venue where schools, families, and aspiring makers from across the New York area will learn the tools and techniques of Making in its many forms. It is a place for collaboration, community and cooperation in trying new ideas and learning from peers.
