ToorCamp Open for Registration

ToorCamp Open for Registration

Europe has some pretty awesome hacker camps, but ToorCamp is the only one in the States that I know of.

ToorCamp, the American hacker camp, first “launched” at the Titan-1 Missile Silo in Washington State in 2009. We’re continuing the tradition on the beautiful Washington Coast and are looking for groups to participate. Show off your crazy projects you’ve been working on, bring some ideas you want to hack on with the other technology experts that will be showing up, organize a campsite with all of your friends and show how awesome your group is, or just see what all the other groups are up to. It’s up to you! Either way, we’d like to show that the US can throw down as much as the European hacker camps (CCC Camp, HAR, etc) so this is your invitation to come!

ToorCamp will be held this summer, August 8-12. [via NYCR]

I was at the first one. It was one of the worst run con or camp event I have ever been to. After promising to have ice, water, electricity, internet, and bathrooms, we were without all those things most of the time. Hopefully this time they’ll at least have enough portable toilets (or at least get them emptied, nobody should see what we saw). Even after running out of ice and water, attendees were not allowed to leave the campsite unless they were leaving for good. Suffice it to say I won’t even consider attending another ToorCamp.

skyspook — you must have been one of those that left the event early. There were a lot of problems in the days prior to the official start (I’ll add to your list the HUGE dustdevils and the the heat, although those aren’t anyone’s fault), but most of that was resolved byt the time the official start came around. The only time there wasn’t water was when the water truck was getting refilled. In fact there was enough water for the showers to run. They were low-pressure but wonderful in the dusty heat. The ice truck came by at least once a day if not more than that. I had no problem with ice. I also had no problem with the power. If anything the power was a problem in that it allowed the parties to go very late when I was trying to sleep. The internet was spotty when you could connect, so I’ll grant you that. And the porta-potties closest to the main camp weren’t pleasant. The ones further away were better, and I note they got the company cleaning them to show up more often. I know as I paid close attention to be first to use them after they were cleaned. I did ask the front gate about the “no in and out” and that was imposed by the property owner, so it wasn’t the camp’s fault. The owner seemed to be a real jerk and pulled other crap too. I had a great time at the camp, and am really looking forward to the new one. It looks like it is at an existing resort that already has power, water, bathrooms, etc so there should be no issue bringing in infrastructure that isn’t there.

It was harsh, which was fuckin’ rad. It’s a camp bro, what did you expect? I’ll be going again this year!

Are they still calling for papers or people to give talks?

    1. steveL says:

John — there’s a link on their site that that says CFP closes July 1st.
