Hackerspace Happenings for June 20, 2012

Home

Are you a hackerspace member with an event you’d like to publicize? Send it to johnb@makezine.com or tweet me at @johnbaichtal and I’ll post it. Also feel free to subscribe to my hackerspaces Twitter list. Hackerspace Happenings runs weekly(ish).

Only Hours Left to Support the Power Racing Series

There is less than a day left to contribute the PPRS, the super cool hackerspace-centric race event featuring DIY electric vehicles repurposed from toy cars.

We’ve set out to create an event that integrates the challenges of electrical engineering with the excitement of experimentation. We want people to take their work seriously without the pressure of fierce competition and secrecy. We believe that engineering can be cheap, use open source hardware and knowledge, and be accessible to any level of expertise.

They’ve set up an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to support their season.

Buy a Chumby Hacker Board, Help Tokyo Hackerspace Move

A while back, Safecast picked up a case of Chumby HackerBoards, which they intended to use in crowd sourced radiation monitoring across northern Japan. Design constraints changed, and so Safecast was left holding onto the Chumbys.

Fast forward 6 months. Tokyo HackerSpace needs to move out of the current location. We found a great spot, but unfortunately the cost of moving in Japan is even worse than the cost of living. Safecast is in our building as well, and thus is forced to move on to a new location. Clearing out their closets, they found the case of Chumbys and struck upon a golden idea: Fund Raiser!

So, here we have an opportunity to get your hands on a Chumby HackerBoard for LOWEST PRICE ANYWHERE! Buy one and help us out of a jam. Buy two. You will still be saving a lot of money!

DIY Wind Turbines Class at HackPittsburgh

Ever wish you could build something to harness some of the power out of the wind? Come to the shop on June 22nd, @ 7pm when HackPittsburgh member Gabe will be giving a talk about making small, low-cost wind turbines out of recycled or found items. The talk will include descriptions and information going from the types of poles, blades, and generators.

MAME Cabinet Hackathon at Freeside Atlanta

Cam, a new Freeside recruit, will be hosting our latest Hackathon, which is a great way to get involved in the space!

For this Hackathon, we’ll be setting up a MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), which will play all of our favorite arcade games from way back when. We will then install the emulator in one of our arcade cabinets and decorate it. We hope to finish with a fully-functional arcade emulator for the space to enjoy.

There is a twist – this will be a MEME-themed MAME cabinet. Maybe that means a nyan cat screensaver. Maybe we’ll put games within games so you can game while you game. This should be a fun project, so come with ideas and let’s make this happen!

Pensacola Hackserspace ECCM Gets Flooded

Emerald Coast Community Makers was flooded on June 10th!

We are REALLY lucky. We just recently finished the deal for this space and had not moved in yet. HVAC was broken so that slowed things down a bit. We are working on cleanup now.

We had planned to have an E-recycling collection day June 30th but we may have to postpone. Current plan is to keep the date. It will help out the locals that received flood damage get rid of anything that was damaged.

Join the group and lets get the party started! let us know what the maker space needs, and get to know other maker nerds in the area that are interested in the projects as well. This is also a place to discuss projects and ask for help.

Wellington (NZ) Makerspace Open

After 3 months of renovations, repairs and randomness, The Wellington Makerspace is finally open for people to turn their ideas into physical things.

The Makerspacers (Makerspacies?) have a workshop for wood-working, a (semi) clean-room, two quiet digital-type spaces and a fledgling chemistry lab. There is a variety of power tools, lathes, band-saws, soldering stations, welding gear etc. Also on the premises are a 3m long CNC Router, a 2m long laser-cutter and an UP! 3D printer. If you can design something, the guys from Makerspace reckon that they have the equipment and expertise in their network to make it.
