Angel Box – The Tunable Glass Armonica

I love the simplicity used in the “Angel Box” tunable glass armonica. It’s a crystal wine glass mounted to an old Heathkit turntable. Gliding your fingers over the rim of the spinning glass causes it to resonate, producing an eerie tone that can be influenced by adding or removing water using the pump.

The Batman action figure is used to hold the tonearm against the glass in an attempt to have the original Heathkit electronics amplify the sound. Unfortunately there was too much wobble to use the amplification but it still sounded great to me. The Angel Box was part of the Echolalia Project from Maker Faire Detoit.

When not working for Make I can be found falling off my unicycle, running in adverse weather conditions, skiing down the nearest hill, restoring vintage motorcycles, or working on my car.
