If you’re looking for a nice portable speaker for your iPhone or iPod Touch and are into the retro look of an old lunch box, then you’ll dig AudioPail, a portable speaker solution from Eureka Springs, Arkansas maker Brian Wood.
This unit works on a very high efficiency amplifier powering two MB Quart 3.5″ full range coaxial speakers. The battery on this unit is a rechargeable 7200mAh Lithium Ion battery, this piece can run for a very, very long time on a single charge.

I was all excited about this project. It looked interesting until I saw that it’s basically product placement for a $300 iPod speaker. I’ve got no objections to kits, but the magazine’s name is Make: not Buy:……….
We’re just as excited about building projects as we are about showing off the end result. Brian Wood created an excellent hand-made speaker, which he is selling on Etsy. I agree with you that $300 is a lot to spend on a speaker, but if you walk into any Apple store or your local big box store, you’ll see comprable speakers selling for significantly more. It’s crazy, I know. I would expect custom work like this to fetch a higher price, but I’ll assume that Brian knows the market and has priced accordingly.
Besides wanting to show others this excellent work, I thought it would inspire others to create their own. Hopefully that is the case and you’re already sourcing your own lunch pail and speakers as I type this
I totally agree with the comments above but with a little know how and trial and error it’s not that difficult to do. Maybe even post up the more cost effective design for the peeps here.
