Big Weekend at New York's 3DEA

3DEA, New York City’s 3D printing pop-up store, has a great line-up of classes and speakers this weekend–as well as loads of 3D printers and 3D printed objects for sale. Anyone who buys a printer or signs up for a Saturday workshop gets a free copy of MAKE’s Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing.

3DEA was created by Openhouse in partnership with MAKE, Shapeways, Ultimaker, UP!, and Eventi. The store will be open until Dec. 27 at the Eventi Hotel, 835 6th Ave. at the corner of 29th St.

Lectures:

Friday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 pm: Artist’s Talk. Artist Josh Harker will be discussing on his Crania Anatomica project, New York-based sculptor and painter Micah Ganske will be speaking on his 3D printed piece exhibited at Art Basel, artist Ana Marva will connect the intrinsic relationship of politics and the state of society within her powder prints; RepRap builder Shane Hope will introducing his colorful groups of scaled-up microorganism forms; and artist Doug Bucci will introduce his work from the point of view of his struggles as a diabetic. Saturday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 pm: Beyond 3D Modeling, Rendering, Presentation and Complex Sets in VFX. Igor Knezevic and Kim Lee lead this futuristic presentation. Collectively, they’ve worked on the upcoming Robocop film, Google Maps, AT&T Pantech and frequently tour the Autodesk University circuit. Lee will focus on bridging digital and physical expression and go inside 3dx Max. Knezevic will review the 3D modeling tools for planning complex props. Tickets are free, compliments of MAKE. Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 am: Intro to Parametric Design with Grasshopper in Rhino

Mode Collective co-founders Ronnie Parsons and Gil Akos lead this three-hour Grasshopper plug-in class. Grasshopper is a visual programming platform that fluidly leverages parametric and associative designs. Parsons and Akos will introduce students to the proper techniques and workflows to design smooth, continuous forms. They’ll also push your subdivision modeling skills forward. In preparation for this intermediate-level workshop, students are encouraged to review this free Intro to Grasshopper course. A PC laptop with Rhino and Grasshopper are required for this class. Saturday, Dec. 15+Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 pm: Intro to 3D Modeling for the Sculptor

Learn about 3D from the ground up with SketchUp and Sculptris, two easy-to-use programs. Both are free, too! And, used across the industry. SketchUp is perfect for visualizing architectural and scaled interiors. Sculptris simulates clay and has endless possibilities for the creative artist. Intro to 3D Modeling for the Sculptor is led by School of Visual Arts CNC Lab Director Erik Guzman who also frequents the international speaker circuit. Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5:30 pm: Intro to Modo

Arthur Young-Spivey leads this two-hour course giving artists, designers and computer engineers an idea of what they can create with organic and exact modeling. Get comfortable with Luxology’s Modo. Young-Spivey has been a Parsons adjunct professor for the past ten years and spoke recently at Maker Faire: New York. Sunday, Dec. 16 at 10 am: Designing for Desktop 3D Printers with Kacie Hultgren

Hultgren’s talk starts with an overview of the 3D printing process, then quickly becomes an in-depth exploration of 3D printers. Learn to harness the power of different 3D printers. A great starting point for designers who want to bring their work to life. Hultgren is more commonly known as PrettySmallThings in the 3D printing universe. She’s an expert in AutoCAD. Sunday, Dec. 16 at noon: 3D Printing & DIY Electronics with Matt Griffin

DIY 3D printing has escaped the pages of science fiction and the constrictions of high-end design and engineering firms to catch the imagination of makers, hackers, educators and journalists across the world. Adafruit’s Matt Griffin will offer a short snapshot of 3D’s new direction and then shift into a hands-on interactive workshop where participants can bring together 3D printing and DIY electronics. Griffin, a former MakerBot Community Manager, helped build the MakerBot and Thingiverse community.
