Learn the basics of modding a remote-controlled (R/C) vehicle for the purpose of making your own terrestrial rover with the Mini Rover Redux. For our latest and last Weekend Project of 2012 we’ve decided to reboot Tom Zimmerman’s classroom rover from MAKE Volume 06, using two cameras instead of one.

As the years progress, this means the available camera technology is not only of a higher resolution, but it also has capabilities like “night vision” and audio transmission for increased applications. For our build we modded an enclosure box to hold two cameras, which opens up a whole new realm of possibilities including ultra-wide-angle vision, front and rear viewing, or stereoscopic 3D video of the world.

While a wireless camera will allow you to see where your rover goes on a remote monitor, you shouldn’t stop there. For example, how would you make a rover land- and water-accessible? Without “night vision” cameras how would you see at night? How would you transmit audio to your rover? If you devise novel modifications to your RC rover, be sure to let us know.
