DiResta: Styrene Box

Workshop
DiResta: Styrene Box

In each bi-monthly episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday at 2pm PST), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy. On this episode of DiResta, Jimmy creates a protective tool case out of plastic stock. -Gareth Branwyn

Materials/Supplies:

  • Styrene plastic sheet
  • MDF board
  • Methylene chloride glue (Weld On #3)
  • Spray paint

Tools

  • Razor
  • Ruler
  • File
  • Sand paper
  • Funnel
  • Band saw
  • Vacuum former ($20 garage sale find!)

Jimmy’s Notes:

I often make boxes to preserve various tools in my shop. Recently I noticed that my semi-new folding ruler was showing signs of wear too quickly. So I took the opportunity to make a video on using styrene plastic to create simple boxes. To make the my box a bit fancier, I vacuum formed my logo on the lid.

Nice vacuume former. I’m about to build my own. Seeing how good they work I can’t wait to start. :)

Fantastic video, the only thing I did not understand – what is he doing with the zippo and the glue?

    1. Justin says:

Sometimes the needle end of the applicator will become clogged with melted styrene when the tip comes into contact with the work piece. Flame/heat melts the styrene clog in the needle, allowing the methylene chloride to flow again.

Nice, but would like to know a little more about the styrene sheets. ABS? What thickness? Got a good source?

  6. Rich Edwards says:

What’s the thickness on the styrene used?
