Race Your Way to Maker Faire

Do you have a need for speed? At this year’s Maker Faire Bay Area, there are two ways for you to test your vehicle building and racing chops. Both the Fun Bike Unicorn Club and the Power Racing Series challenge teams to build unique, DIY vehicles and bring them to Maker Faire for a series of friendly competitions.

The Fun Bike Unicorn Club (FBUC) is bringing back their popular Death Defying Figure 8 Pedal Car race and challenging teams of makers to create pedal-powered karts. There are only three rules for your vehicle: 1) It must be pedal-powered and single-seat, 2) It must have no less than 4 wheels, and 3) It must have functional brakes. So let your imagination run wild! You can register your team here: FBUC Pedal Car Races

The Power Racing Series challenges teams of builders to strip down and rebuild a kid’s Power Wheels-style car, demonstrating both creativity and engineering moxie while still staying within a $500 budget (not counting safety equipment and the base vehicle). The 2013 race series launches at Maker Faire Bay Area, with an exhibition race and a special guest judge, Jay Lamm from the 24 Hours of Lemons series, who will invent penalties for the teams on the spot. You can register your team here: Power Racing Signup (Be sure to read all the rules!)

The race schedule is still being finalized, but organizers hope to get in one race each hour throughout the Faire, alternating between FBUC and Power Racing on the same track. Maybe there will even be time for some friendly competition between the modded electric vehicles and the pedal cars! So assemble your team and sign up today to get in on the action!
