Right now I’m sorting all my resistors into plastic bags, and it’s kind of a lengthy process! Anthony Clay wrote a program called EESPeak that speaks the numeric value when you describe the colors.
Have you ever had a giant pile of loose resistors to organize? I have! Instead of slowly calculating every single part in your head, I wrote this program, which allows me to simply call out the codes, and the computer responds with the part’s value! I’m sure I could make this much more useful in the future, but here’s the initial version.
You can follow along with EESpeak’s development on its Github repository.

This is good but what about us who are colorblind? I’m dreading going through the pile I have to try and figure them all out.
Same here. I’m not even color-blind but telling certain colors apart (like brown and purple) is virtually impossible for me. I sort by clamping my multimeter probes close together in my panavise – I can then just touch each resistor to the probes and get the value. Works quick!
If you have an iPhone, there’s an app to do that: https://itunes.apple.com/app/resistor-photo-id/id474400855?mt=8
Yup colour blindness and resistors dont mix. This caused me a heap of problems when I was a kid learning electronics. Your iPhone app is CLOSE. I have a sketch for a OpenCV program that reads the colour automatically, no human input needed at all. The plan is to have a hi res camera over a scatter of resistors on the bench and have them automatically labled, on screen. Im in christchurch New Zealand, due to earth quakes im doing the van circuit and living off solar power so development time is an issue. Will share when it complete.
