The new Lilypad MP3 board is out and it looks pretty sweet! Lilypads are washable Arduinos designed for wearable electronics. You can sew them onto your clothing and wire them up with conductive thread. The new MP3 board is basically an Arduino — it’s got the standard ATmega 328p with Arduino bootloader. However, like the WaveShield, it can play MP3 sound clips from a MicroSD card. It has five trigger inputs and when grounded, each plays a MP3 clip using the code preloaded on the ATmega — but you have to have speakers wired in! I love the fact that they have the footprint for a RPG rotary encoder in the middle to do more advanced stuff.

I’m not sure where you’re getting “washable” from, they look like standard components and I can’t see water resistance on the product or project pages. As fantastic as that would be…
With regards to “washable” see the descriptions on any of the LilyPad pages, for example

But basically, remove the battery and speakers, wash gently by hand, rinse well and leave it to dry out completely before adding power again.
I’m working on a project that requires standalone HQ audio playback in a small-format box. I was going to purchase the Sparkfun shield due to the supposed ability to playback PCM; but I’m glad I waited a few weeks! Totally picking one of these up instead. (The project is basically a box with a large glowing button that triggers playback of a sound that elicits an otoacoustic emission in an observer. The sound is fairly reliant on high-frequency content, so compression introduced via perceptual encoding will diminish the effect.) Regarding the “waterproof,” comment above, one could even coat the device in some of that ultra-hydrophobic stuff Rustoleum just released if you really wanted to make it completely water-resistant. I believe they call it “NeverWet.”

I have a lilypad. When I go through the test sketch that is supposed to trigger an mp3 when you connect an alligator clip to ground and then touch the other end to the t1 or t2 etc points I only get the first few seconds of the MP3. Does anyone have any clues as to why that is happening?
