5 DIY Ways to Beat the Summer Heat

Baby, it's hot outside.
Baby, it’s hot outside.

It’s sweltering just about everywhere in the lower 48 this week, just in time for us to launch some rockets and break out the BBQ for July 4th (heck, they’re even baking cookies on dashboards in Phoenix). And in places where every home doesn’t have AC, it’s getting downright unbearable. So we figured we’d do our part to help folks find relief, and collect a few of the great projects we’ve written or seen around the Internet to inspire you to take personal cooling into your own hands. If you have your own ideas or links to other projects, please leave them in the comments!

Tip #6: Check your AC filter. If your air conditioning fan is trying to pull through a shag carpet, it won’t work terribly well.

I can’t see how the evaporative cooling idea could work. It might cool the water a bit, but only by evaporating warm water into the air and increasing the humidity of the room. This is probably the opposite of what you want.

If you want to take advantage of evaporative cooling, point the fan at your face. The evaporating perspiration will cool your skin down. I think most people have figured this one out already though…

    nice..

the fan/cooler/ice chest can be vaslty increased with Dry ice,

a few years back on a camping trip that consisted of a beer keg & a crap load of dry ice to keep it cold. We drained the keg in a matter of hours, & the dry ice was just sitting there…

after playing with the dry ice & water & some sealed water bottles (do not do this if you do not know what you are doing, this will blow a finger off)

I was laying in my tent sweating bullets on a 100* night, & decided to make the dry ice work for me. I had a little 12v desk fan & a similar foam cooler, filled the cooler to the top, put th fan on & connected it to my car & boom AC. I did also create a vented intake pipe from plastic cups from the fan to under the dry ice, this was the intake charge pipe was chilled, & the air was forced through the dry ice from under it, to come out the top…worked awesome!
