MAKE Asks: Routine

MAKE Asks: Routine

MAKE Asks: is a weekly column where we ask you, our readers, for responses to maker-related questions. We hope the column sparks interesting conversation and is a way for us to get to know more about each other.

This week’s question: When you decide to start working on a project, what is your routine for preparation, and what is the rhythm of your workflow as you labor away?

I always “normalize” my workshop by cleaning it all up, then setting out the things I know I’m going to need. But once I get going, I’m like a cyclone. Tools and parts are strewn everywhere and I work until I’ve had enough. Then the process repeats. If I’m working while sitting down, on an electronics project for instance, I’ll make mixtapes (yes, as in cassettes) to break up the monotony of the work.

Post your responses in the comments section.

For me half of the fun comes out of exploring the object I wish to improve, hack, make etc.
I find the process of making something more exciting than the goal because I have the goal already in my head.
So you could say my preparation is to expect anything.
