Maker Camp: Art on the Move

Today on Maker Camp (11am PDT on Google+) we’ll be talking about the intersection of art, science, education—and fun!makercamp_400

We’ll hangout with Anne Mayoral and Chris Myers, two dynamic artists and designers who founded San Francisco’s Artbot Toys, makers of the ever-popular Spinbot. Spinbot has two legs and holds markers or other drawing tools and spins about to create gyroscopic art. It’s easy for kids to build and was designed to teach kids about basic electrical circuits and to get kids making.

Also on today’s hangout we’ll meet Dan Wempa, Peggy Monahan, David Wells, Satbir Multani, and Maria Cortez Ruiz who all work at New York’s excellent NY Hall of Science (NYSCI). NYSCI is the site of Maker Faire New York Sept. 21-22, and a great place for inspired science in action. They offer 450+ hands-on exhibits, plus a variety of workshops, demonstrations, and programs for families, students, and teachers.

In addition, we’ll also check out Google’s Geek Street Fair, a public event in New York City aimed at sparking interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Spin art!

Today’s basic project is giant spin art, creating whirling, colorful art by mounting a canvas on an adapted corded drill chuck. The advanced project is a cool, DIY digital flipbook.

Get arty and get to MAKE’s Google+ page at 11am PDT to join in the fun. And be sure to visit the Maker Camp community page on Google+ and post a project of your own.
