At the conclusion of yesterday’s Hardware Innovation Workshop, the office of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg once again declared the entire week “Maker Week.”

In addition to naming the winner of New York’s Next Top Maker competition, a representative of the mayor’s office presented Dale Dougherty, Maker Media CEO; and Sherry Huss, Maker Media vice president, with a proclamation in recognition of Maker Faire and its impact on New York City’s maker movement. The Mayor presented a similar proclamation last year.

“As the old sold goes, if you can make it here,” Bloomberg wrote in the proclamation, “you can make it anywhere and I join you in applauding the all the makers who continue to tinker, take risks, try new things and introduce their ideas first to New York City and then the world.”

Maker Week stands for all of what Maker Faire values: ingenuity, creativity, and a DIY spirit in a space that makers of every age and skill level can see, learn, do, and explore.

In addition to World Maker Faire New York this weekend, the following activities are taking place throughout New York City to bring makers together during Maker Week:

  • Today, Sept. 19: 12th NY Hardware Start-Up Meet-up, New York, NY

      How about Maker Comedy/Humor?

      Shoppingbag Mitch,

      Sorry, Bloomberg’s not Stalin.

  2. Henry says:

Honestly, a mayor who doesn’t want you drinking large sodas probably doesn’t want you playing with hot soldering irons or band saws…

    1. Stett Holbrook says:

From what I know about the mayor’s experience as an electrical engineering student at Johns Hopkins, I’d say the opposite is true.

      1. Henry says:

Bloomberg is well known for failing to adhere to his strict rules, this is because he believes he’s better than the people over whom he attempts to lord.

Therefore implying that if the mayor does X he must let everyone else do it is wrong.
