This post is coming to you live from the Saint Malo Mini-Maker Faire—the first Maker Faire in France—being held at the IUT de Saint-Malo here this weekend.

Almost the first thing you see when you walk in the door here at the Saint Malo mini-Maker Faire, is a small wooden house, tucked away at the end of the table where you can learn to solder.

John Lejeune—who runs the fabrication laboratory at EESAB in Rennes—is a maker that’s done what I would have thought impossible. He has built an open source house.

Built entirely using local artisans, the house gained a coveted energy efficiency award qualifying it as a passive house—or “blow in-door” if you translate the French literally. You will soon be able to download all the plans for the house, which will be released under an open source license.
