Miami Nice! Maker Faire Comes to Florida This Weekend

Miami’s first mini maker faire is this Saturday, Nov. 16. The event, which is expect to draw in more than 60 makers and 1,000 attendees, is sponsored by the Knight Foundation and is an initiative of an organization dedicated to supporting the local maker community.

The fair will include talks, presentations, panel discussions, and short film screenings at three main locations in Miami’s Wynwood district: The LAB Miami, The Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse and O Cinema. The larger South Florida community is also invited to learn more about the maker movement through information and educational sessions and meetups.

Here’s some of the good stuff you’ll find at the fair:

Marty and Otto Joyride

Marty and Otto’s joyride is a sculpture of collected antiques and vintage objects by Mike Rivamonte. Mike wanted to bring the piece to life so he collaborated with Garrett Mace of Macetech to enhance the sculpture. Under the sculpture are more than 60 Arduino-controlled LEDs. User can control the direction, color and speed of the LEDs.

Documentary screening: SPARK: A Burning Man Story

Each year, 60,000 people from around the globe gather in the Nevada desert to build a temporary city, collaborating on large-scale art and partying for a week before burning a giant effigy in a ritual frenzy. Spark: A Burning Man Story brings audiences behind-the-scenes of the celebration, “shining a light on the triumphs and challenges of the artists fighting harsh realities to keep their ideals of unbridled freedom and community alive.”

Jorge Roldan

Jorge Roldan is an artist, graphic designer, illustrator, cartoonist, sculptor, and inventor. Jorge is best known for his sculptures that are made from garbage. He tries and not purchase any of the materials that go into his sculptures. The rustier and more damaged, the better, he says.

I can’t go to the fair, but if you’re near Miami you should.
