Welcome to Get Started with Arduino: A Hands-On Introductory Workshop!

Along with the sight of a Christmas tree forlornly losing its needles in the corner, one of the great tragedies of the post-Christmas daze is the sight of an Arduino that’s not blinking or sensing buttons or moving a motor as part of a gift-returning robot army.

Often, after the initial excitement, an Arduino can find itself stuck in a drawer because you don’t know what to do next. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you or someone you know received an Arduino this Christmas (especially as part of the Maker Shed “Getting Started” kit), you can follow along with my introductory video workshop and learn:

• How to install the Arduino development software you need.

• How to get that all-important LED light blinking.

• What a breadboard is and how to use it to create an electronic circuit.

• How to tell when a push button is pressed.

• How to combine what you’ve learned to make a reverse flashlight and mobile light show!

It’s a point of pride that I was once told that I “make the confusing and unexplainable seem possible,” and over the past four years at the O’Reilly OSCON conference, I’ve helped more than 150 people learn how to get started with the Arduino using the same material that’s now available in this video workshop.

Don’t let your Arduino just gather dust in a drawer after the 25th. Learn from this video and you’ll be well on your way to letting it also gather data on how many times that drawer gets opened as you try to remember where you stored the New Year’s decorations.
