Belkin’s WeMo platform of connected home products is growing to include a hacker-friendly module called the WeMo Maker. Announced this week at International CES 2014, the device allows you to switch up to 36 volts DC or take readings from 5 volt analog sensors. All of this can done remotely through the Internet with Belkin’s app via their cloud service. For local control, you can use the WeMo SDK to roll your own service if you prefer.

In the video above, I got a quick overview of the WeMo Maker from Belkin Product Manager Jake Whisler. They expect that the device will be available this summer. No pricing information is available yet.

It’s a nice step, but unfortunate that they’ve shacked it to the cloudyness. My house is a personal thing to me, and I’m not thrilled about using needlessly “cloudy” systems.

Edit: I really need to finish the paragraph first… there is a local option.

Looks like something to hack around with. Sometimes I get a gadget based on what it can become, not what it is . . .

    Sorry, but yawn.

Specifically, everyone is making systems that integrate vertically, but only with their own systems. The other fallacy of IoT are the companies that want a small monthly fee for their cloud services, again with no horizontal integration. It’s just a new term that applies to what has been going on for years.
