Big New Hobbies for Little Hands in the Maker Shed

Banish idle hands from your home or classroom with some awesome new robotics kits for Makers-in-training.  Whether youngsters are interested in solar energy, programming with Arduino, or beginning electronics, The Maker Shed has kits to entertain and educate.  Rainy day blues are no match for a compelling new hobby! Consider Sphero 2.0, a robot that’s a spherical, glowing bundle of energy.

MKOS01-6

Zippy, smart, and bluetooth-controlled, this bot is seriously futuristic.  Roll along with Sphero and check out all of the 25 App-driven games, or create your own with a user friendly API.  Sphero 2.0 is faster, brighter, and better than ever; its drivetrain boasts a top speed of 7 feet per second!

If you’re more interested in a traditional bot, meet Sparki!

MKAB2-2

Sparki is the newest offering from our friends at ArcBotics, who are big fans of creating educational, open source products.  Sparki was brought to fruition by a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, and now he’s ready to come home with you! Sparki is an Arduino robot that is ready to play right out of the box with his included remote control. Also, you can program the bot with Arduino code or the education-minded Minibloq drag-and-drop graphical programming, similar to Scratch.  Sparki has a variety of sensors, motors, and phototransistors, giving him the ability to “fetch”, “find”, and even draw!

MKBR06-2

The Solar Bug Kit is great for a quick after school or weekend project when there’s a bit of sunshine. These are the types of bugs that you are happy to find on your floor!  This kit produces two sun-hungry critters that scuttle around after they are charged by the small solar panel on the back of the bot. Don’t forget to break out the paints to personalize your bugs before you construct them!

If none of these kits tickle you or your mini-Maker, check out our other cool kits for kids and get to your Shed!

The Maker Shed is brought to you by Maker Media, the makers of MAKE Magazine, the Maker Faire, and much more.

Launched originally as a source for back issues of MAKE Magazine, the Maker Shed expanded rapidly to meet the demand for 'projects in a box,' otherwise known as kits. Now we have a little bit of everything for makers, crafters, and budding scientists, from Arduinos to sock monkeys to chemistry sets .
