Space Craft: 21 Works of Art Inspired by the Cosmos

The wonders of the universe have long inspired humans to create art in homage. Whether the medium be welded metal or precision-cut plywood or crocheted yarn, makers are creatively showing their love of space, planets, space travel, and beyond. Pictured above and below is the fantastical 41-foot Raygun Gothic Rocketship, by talented Oakland, Calif.-based art collective Five Ton Crane. While the rocket itself doesn’t soar, the imaginations of all who lay eyes on it do. It features three full decks inside, the interior design is aesthetically based on science fiction from the 1930s to the early 1950s, and the attention to detail is astounding.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
