Columbia, South Carolina Maker Faire Roundup

Columbia, South Carolina Maker Faire Roundup

Saturday, the 14th of June, I had the pleasure of displaying at the Columbia, SC Maker Faire.  Although I had a few other projects on my table, I was excited to show off the “MountainBeest” waker that I’d been working on for the last year or so.  It was hung prominently at the front of the building, the Edventure Children’s Museum, but one thing I hadn’t anticipated was how little people actually look above them.  Something to remember for next year.

Besides my project, and a gigantic child that lives there permanently, there were some other really amazing exhibits.  I was delighted to meet Marius Valdes, whose unique and beautiful art I had actually seen displayed before.  Also impressive was the IT2Pi booth.  They had several unique experiments, but the Raspberry Pi submerged in mineral oil really caught my attention.  I also enjoyed meeting some people from the Asheville Makers just over the border in North Carolina.

Although I can’t mention all the Makers here, one of the coolest exhibits was the Telepresence Ferris Wheel Featured below.  After donning a small headset, one is able to see a view of the picture in the background from the point of view of the small Ferris wheel.  Although I was a little skeptical at first, I was extremely impressed with how real it seemed.

All together, it was a fun event.  Much thanks to Jay Robinson and the rest of the crew for putting things together there, and for inspiring me to let the ‘Beest out of the garage for a trip to Columbia!  There were many other exhibits not mentioned here, so if you’re in the area, maybe you can stop by next year!
