Abstract Painting Workshop

I am part of a makerspace in Kitchener, ON called kwartzlab, and have been known to run art workshops from time to time. I run an arts program through the lab that brings in new artists regularly. It’s a great way to meet new people and get more connected in the community. I was very excited to have Jim Tubb come and teach us a thing or two about abstract art. But I was mostly excited to just have the opportunity to sit and make something.

We used peg board from the hardware store, cut into 12″ squares. The beauty of this is being able to push paint through the back of the panel to create a wonderful pop of color. There is no right or wrong with this type of art making, it is just a lot of experimentation and fun. If you don’t like how it’s turning out, just change it. Working with acrylics is quite forgiving.

I encourage you to get some friends together and smear some paint around. All the materials we used were easily found. Pegboard from the hardware store (I did have to cut these down on the table saw), acrylic paint from Michaels, brushes and palette knives from the dollar store.
