Flashback: Crochet Conversation Heart Garland

Growing up, I loved class Valentine’s Day parties, complete with decorated shoeboxes and handmade Valentines. I often stocked up on Conversation Hearts, ensuring that my supply would last me until Easter. I had great fun laying them one by one on the table and making up my own sentimental sentences. Next, I’d lick away to see just how many licks it took to wipe away the quirky messages stamped on each pastel heart.

So this crocheted Conversation Heart Garland is for all those hopeless romantics who are charmed by old fashioned simplicity and who, like me, can’t resist this confection and the lovey-dovey messages behind the cellophane heart window.

Materials

14 yards pink yarn I used Red Heart Soft Baby Steps yarn in Baby Pink
8 yards pale green yarn I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn in Mint
3 yards white yarn I used Pattons Beehive Baby Sport yarn in Angel White
Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Finished Size:

Heart: 3 1/2″
5-heart garland: 18″

Size/Gauge:

3 sc stitches = 1″
3 rows = 1″

Abbreviations:
ch= chain
sc= single crochet
st= stitch
sl st= slip stitch

Pattern

You will make 3 pink hearts and 2 mint hearts.

Row 1: Ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc in next ch, ch 1, turn: 3 sc.

Rows 2-5: 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last st.

Rows 6-8: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 9: You will be making the first lobe of the heart now. So, sc in 6 sts across, ch 1, turn.

Rows 10-13: Sc in second ch from hook, and sc in each sc across.

Finish off.

Row 12: Now sl st yarn on opposite side of heart to create second lobe. Ch 1 and sc in 6 sts across for a total of 6 sc.

Rows 13-16: Sc in second ch from hook and sc in each sc across.

Finish off.

Finishing:

Use white yarn and a tapestry needle to stitch on sentiments such as “Hug,” “Cute,” “Luv,” “Hot,” etc. You can weave in the ends; no need to tie a knot.

Assembly:
Use white yarn and your tapestry needle again to sew the hearts into a garland. Lay the hearts right sides together and make about 5 whip stitches around the outer edge. Finish off.

Once the hearts are all sewn together, use your crochet hook and sl st white yarn into a sc of the heart, ch 12 and sl st into the same sc to attach the loop. Repeat this for the opposite side.
