Infamous art world prankster and DIYer Tom Sachs has been making homemade boomboxes since childhood, often from unorthodox materials such as cinderblocks, plywood, and most recently, porcelain. Now you can see all his amplified artworks from the past 15 years in an exhibition at The Contemporary Austin Art Museum.

Titled “Boombox Retrospective 1999-2015,” the project demonstrates the artist’s unique, imaginative, and rigorous DIY aesthetic and is comprised largely of works that riff on the idea of the “boombox,” the iconic emblem of 1980s hip-hop culture.

Despite being displayed as an art installation, all of the works in the exhibition are functional pieces of audio equipment and will be playing sounds curated by pop icons and friends of the artist throughout the exhibition.

Sound good to you? The exhibition will be kicking out the jams in Austin through April 19th!
