Megan Scott of The Joy Kitchen was concerned that fig newtons wouldn’t taste as good as she remembered them being when she was a child. So, rather than risking the snack time heartbreak of discovering a false memory, she took it upon herself to create some homemade fig newtons that were just as good as she remembered.

Soft and slightly chewy with the pleasant pop of tiny fig seeds in the filling, these figgy lovelies manage not only to outshine the cookie that inspired them, but they’re also good enough to make new memories.

The recipe that she came up with for Food52 simply calls for figs and made from scratch cookie dough, but the real secret to her success is putting the still-hot cookies into a zip-lock bag to let them steam as they cool off, keeping them soft, just like the newtons from your childhood memories!
