5 Maker Podcasts You Should Be Listening To

Education Workshop

Makers are a passionate bunch, and when we’re not in the shop, we like to watch other people in the shop or listen to other people talk about being in the shop. Here, in no particular order, are five podcasts about makers and making that are absolutely worth your time.

Making It – Jimmy DiResta, Bob Clagett, and David Picciuto talk about topics ranging from brainstorming and creativity to setting goals and follow-through. The three very different personalities, each with their own very successful YouTube channel, come together every week to inspire you to get out and make more stuff. If you are reading this, you probably already listen to this show. Jimmy loves you.

MakerCast – Host Jon Berard has created a podcast that is part biography, part inspiration, and always worth listening to. With a background in CNC machining, Jon originally wanted MakerCast to focus on that area before he decided to branch out into the wider world of making. Past guests include Jimmy DiResta, Linn from Darbin Orvar, Marc Spagnuolo of The Wood Whisperer, and Zach Kaplan of Inventables as well as some fascinating interviews from a bespoke tailor (Joseph Mapes) and a maker of custom-fit baseball gloves (Scott Carpenter). Jon has a talent for putting his guests at ease and letting them tell their (often fascinating) stories.

The Darbin Orvar Podcast – Linn and her husband Matt delve into the conceptual side of making in this occasional podcast. According to Linn, “Mostly what I think sets us apart is the conversation style we have. Since we know each other so well we can go into any topic, which we tend to do often, and so that leads to unexpected discussions. In no way is it planned or scripted ahead of time. I think some of the subjects we hit are often neglected in the maker area — like the philosophy and cultural impact of makers and making.”

Reclaimed Audio – Hosts Phil Pinsky, Tim Sway, and William Lutes spend an hour every week discussing various aspects of upcycling and using reclaimed materials. These discussions range from the practical (where to source various materials) to the philosophical (what, exactly, constitutes reclaimed material?) and various stops in between. What makes the podcast so special? “Chemistry,” says Pinsky.  “We have an incredible rapport that translates into a fun dialogue every week. The information that we provide is great, but it’s presented in a way that makes you feel like you’re part of the conversation, and ultimately, it is our objective to educate and engage our audience.” Lutes gave a very similar answer: “The chemistry between Phil, Tim, and I, along with the fact that we know we are NOT special. We are just three guys who, like a lot of other folks, are passionate about Making, Sharing, and being active in this community.” Even if you don’t use reclaimed material yourself, the passion of the hosts is infectious and their group dynamic makes the show easy to listen to.

Faking It – As one of the newest podcasts on the scene, “Faking It” has distinguished itself not by engaging in technical discussion or detailed minutiae, but by engaging with the act of making on a deeply human level. The hosts are David Waelder, Andrew Aragon, Andy Birkey, Rod Reyes, and Mike Laffey. Waelder gave his perspective on what makes the show special: “I guess we are interested in being a bit more personal and open,” he said. “I personally think communication is a major issue in the world. Folks are so f****ng guarded, so I think relating to listeners with genuine conversation and ideas is the only way for me to stay interested. Life is always happening to everyone, so let’s dig into that in an organic fashion.”
