Maker Faire Taipei Returns This Weekend After Tripling in Size

One of the most densely populated countries in the world, the small island nation of Taiwan is home to roughly 24 million people, a growing number of which are joining the Maker Movement. And with their prowess in innovation and creativity, it’s no surprise. In 2013, Maker Faire Taipei debuted, drawing a crowd of 10,000. In 2014, that number doubled to 20,000. Last year, the community came out in full force to show their support, with an impressive 70,000 attendees. This year’s Faire, taking place on May 7 and 8 at the National Taiwan Science Education Center, is on track to be even bigger.

The event is co-produced by Make: Taiwan, who publishes Chinese-language versions of Make: magazine, like the latest one, shown below.

Brian Song of Make: Taiwan shared some images and select highlights from last year’s Maker Faire Taiwan:

There were several competitions: robot combat, robot soccer, drone obstacle course. There were dozens of new local companies introducing 3D printers. MediaTek, a leader in semiconductor design solution, was a major sponsor at the Faire and introduced their LinkIt One controller board for IoT projects and prototyping. Students from the National Taiwan Normal University Department of Technology made an Iron Man costume suit with lighted chest plate and lighted hand armor. There was also Hello Maker, a group of young makers who have created a robot education group to educate young kids about robots. At the Faire, they displayed various creation of their young students and will be exhibiting at this year’s Faire as well.

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
