This Week in Making: Cyborg Eyeballs, Quantum Computers, and Coffee

• Google patents new electronic lenses. These lenses aren’t going to replace the ones in your glasses, they’re going replace the lenses in your eyeballs. This invention could give a whole new meaning to the phrase, “Ugh, there’s a bug in my eye!”

• It can take up to 18 hours to make a batch of cold brew coffee, but if you’re a coffee fan, that taste can’t be beat. John Edgar Park showed us how to make this awesome, Arduino-automated drip tower to satisfy our own cold brew cravings.
• This week Adam Savage was on the /r/maker subreddit to answer questions. Insights include how to promote making, quick suggestions for projects and must-have tools, and book recommendations.
• Amazon announced a contest: Program a skill for Alexa and you could win your own Amazone Echo.

• There’s more to these cards than their intricate pop-up designs. Lovepop is a company that’s combining naval engineering techniques and entrepreneurial training for teens to remake the world of greeting cards.
• What would you do with a quantum computer? If you’re the kind of person that has an answer for that question, then you should know that IBM has opened up one of their quantum processors for the public to experiment with. Have at it, kid!

Tip of the Week:

We’ve done glue tips before (and none more popular than our glue-anything-to-anything reference chart), but here’s a tip that’s just satisfying: A silicone basting brush can be used to spread glue, and once the glue is dried it will peel right off the silicone brush.
