Make a Pair of BB-8 High Heels

Instructables staffer “mikeasaurus” created these crazy-cool Star Wars BB-8 high heels using a pair of 2″ ladies pumps, a bolt for the new heel, and a BB-8 head and body made from a wooden bead and a polystyrene ball, respectively. Some welding, cutting, gluing, and careful painting later, and voila! You’ll be the hit of the Resistance Ball in these babies.

Mike describes the scope of the project:

These custom BB-8 heels will be made from a pair of white 2″ mid heel ladies pumps. These shoes offer plenty of height in the heel to allow for the new ball to be inserted, and a closed toe which will provide ample space to decorate.

To accommodate the new ball heel the existing heel will need to be removed and replaced with a slender metal post which the ball will rotate on, the post will be made of steel and be more than sturdy enough to support the weight of an adult. On the post I used two 2.5″ solid wood balls, which will be able to freely spin. The embellishments on the heel were mostly foam which is stuck with my favourite adhesive, E6000

BB-8

The only hard part of this entire build is having to weld a new heel post onto the steel shank found on the insole. Mike also welded another, smaller screw coming off of the heel post to accept BB-8’s head (made from a wooden bead).

BB-8Once Mike had BB-8’s head in place, he sketched on the panel lines and other details and then painted them. BB-8’s camera eye was recreated using a faceted craft store plastic gem.

BB-8Colored foam pieces and carefully drawn-on panel lines really help the shoes to “pop.”

You can see the full instructions to this build on its Instructables page. If you like your sci-fi sartorial a little more classic, also check out Mike’s earlier R2-D2 heels project.
