Here's a note from the author, Tim H.:
You're right that PLCs can cycle much faster, but the filtering used to debounce inputs and the normal relay outputs do restrict their speed in most applications to around 10 loops a second.

There is one thing that the author mentioned that is incorrect. He stated that most PLCs have a cycle time of less than 10 loops per second. On all of the programs and PLCs I've used (all Rockwell / Allen-Bradley) I've had cycle times of less than 20ms (so at least 50 cycles per second).Posted by kfbest on October 25, 2010 at 17:23:04 Pacific Time
