Note that the front axle in these videos differs from Eric Chu’s build in MAKE magazine.
Rick uses a 7” length of 5mm OD (outside diameter) / 4mm ID (inside diameter) carbon fiber (CF) tube as the main axle piece. Into each end of this tube he nests and superglues 2” lengths of 4mm OD / 3mm ID carbon fiber (CF) tubing; 3mm OD CF tubing; and, finally, 0.078" music wire, with ¼” of the wire sticking out of each end for gluing into the 3.35" wheels.
In contrast, Eric’s build uses a 7” length of thicker 5mm OD / 3mm ID CF tubing as the main axle component, with 2” lengths of 1/8” aluminum tubing connecting the CF to the 3.35" wheels. The CF tubing and wheels are both drilled out with a 1/8” drill bit to accommodate the aluminum tubing.
