But am having trouble getting the water level gauge to not take on air and immediately drain. Any suggestions on keeping the air out when I put the gauge into the tank?

I fill the tube as well as the bottle with water, and insert it rapidly into the water tank. Some water runs out, but not much.

If the tube isn't well sealed to the bottle, air will leak in and the bottle will drain.
