The article mentions NOT using a can that's held paint and that makes sense. However, the can that I have, while brand new, does have some kind of dark grey liner on the inside. Is it still usable for this project?Posted by bgraffis on October 01, 2012 at 05:43:34 Pacific Time

All the quart paint cans I have used have had this coating, and I have not experienced any trouble (no discernible odor, no unusual blackening of the pot, etc.) The coating slowly patinates and darkens on the visible surfaces of the can. This said, I am not a toxicologist, and it would be irresponsible of me to slap you on the back and say "Aw, it's nothing." If you are concerned about safety, I would recommend two measures to mitigate any possibility of harm. First, you can remove the lining from the quart paint can mechanically using a wire wheel attached to a power drill. The other thing I would recommend in any event is simply to make sure you always put a lid on whatever you cook. Using a lid traps heat, making the whole thing more efficient anyway, and creates a loosely sealed positive-pressure environment to prevent any smoke or soot entering the pot.
And, to repeat the warning in the article, you must always use this outdoors, as the primary combustion products can kill you a lot quicker than anything the paint can has on it.

Thanks for those ideas. I think I'll plan on using both. I was having a difficulty finding a pain can that was still metal so I grabbed the lined one when I found it. I'm glad I'll be able to make use of if.Posted by bgraffis on October 02, 2012 at 05:55:35 Pacific Time
