    It’s a pity that the MAX756 is outdated – none of my regular online electronics shops carry it. The improved versions are all very, very small which makes it hard for the casual hobbyist to create this circuit.

    Perhaps you were hit by a temporary RoHS (lead-free) changeover issue.
