I recently purchased two sets of the Mechanix Illustrated How To Do It Encyclopedia (1963 and 1971) that were apparently sold in grocery stores (“A new volume each week!”)… both are filled with great articles about stuff to build and basic knowledge about everything a handyman should know. Popular Mechanics also did an encyclopedia set that’s equally excellent (“Make this pool table!”). The best set I’ve found thus far was the Popular Mechanics “What to Make” series published from 1940 to the mid 50s. Like all the “encyclopedias” above, it’s merely a “best of” reprint of the previous year’s articles. But what articles!
All for disgustingly cheap on ebay.
The coolest old books — the Foxfire series. Everything from log cabin building to dressing a pig. It’s all Appalachian crafts. The second best– look for an academic library to throw out: The Chemical Formulary about 15 volumes from 1933 to 1957 with recipes for everything from pyrotechnics to vegetable soup! Includes recipes for hair pomade and flares… Very, very cool…

We had, as kids, the full set of Time-Life’s Family Creative Workshop series, published in the mid-’70s. I seem to remember we got them as a kind of subscription, although they’re hardback, not magazines. I now have them in my possession. They’re out of print but you can find them on ebay.
They’re chock-full of all kinds of crafts. My favorites when I was young were paper airplanes, puppets and marionettes, magic tricks, origami, and zoetrope toys. But there are 27 volumes so that barely scratches the surface.
This may have been mentioned in another post below, but Lee Valley has over 60 classic books at very resonable prices. Lee Valley Classic Reprints
I have a set of books called The Practical Handyman’s Encyclopedia, copyright 1963 by Greystone Press. All sorts of projects, from room additions to bomb shelters to miniature CB converters.
They’re pretty cool. A quick google search shows a few may be available out there.
