Looks cool. What does it do? Looks like a game of simon. Wish I could get down to SF, I’d love to get one of these, AND go to the Hardware Hacking workshop. Maker Faire sounds awesome. Alas, highschool kids never have the money.

    Cheers

So, it’s a pre-made PCB with a PIC with a pre-made firmware. Just where is the ‘hacking’ aspect of this?

  3. pelrun says:

What you imply is the very antithesis of hacking – expecting other people to tell you what to do with it. Think up something yourself!

Fub… The hardware hacking comes in when you want to do something with this little thing. Think about programming a PIC to do use the Simon game play type but playing a different game. Or mod the circuit board to shock you when you loose. The point of hardware hacking is to mod the pre-made, if you built it from scratch it’s a bit more like “electronics design”. Pelrun is right just THINK up something to do with it. :)

Is there any chance that Joe or Make will have the kit available for sale for those of us who won’t be able to make it to the Makers Faire? I’d spring for one, and maybe you could include a hard copy of Joe’s presentation as well.

Yes, the kits will be offered by O’Reilly both at the Maker Faire (for those interested in the workshop) and afterwards (for any remaining inventory we have).

An outline for the hardware hacking course should be up somewhere shortly, but part of the exercise is about basic electronics, learning how to solder/desolder/take measurements, etc. and this board is the learning aid for that. Plus, when you’re done with the course, you can walk around with it, show it off to your friends, and hack it to do something else (if you choose).

The game is the simple memory game of Simon with a few twists I’ve thrown it. :)
