Bre has some great photos from the Museum of Telecommunication, he writes –

The Museum of Telecommunication, aka, The Telephone Museum, is a must see for any tinkerer. Run by folks who spent a good chunk of time working for the phone company, this place is a treasure trove of gadgets and telecommunication devices. Rich Barger took my friends and I on a tour around 2 floors of amazing clicking machines and explained the magic of telephones, switchboards, relays, and showed us how it all works. If there is a machine that has been used in communicating over wires, they’ve got it there and it works.

Ok, I don’t think my life will be complete until I go there.

Both my father and uncle started working for Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph back in the 70’s, and are soon to be retired (it is Windstream Communications now). There is another phone museum in Lincoln, NE that is related to LT&T (named after the founder):

It is not a huge place – only a four or five rooms, but I remember a cool setup consisting of two rotary phones with the old rotary switching hardware in between. You could pick up one phone, dial the other phone’s number, and watch all the rotary hardware move to the correct contact points to complete the circuit. If you’re near, or on your way through, Lincoln, it’s a fun little stop.
