InsideOutside – location senstitive temperature wear

Anna writes –

InsideOutside is a piece of (under-)clothing that heats up or cools down uncomfortably when the wearer gets near spaces where others feel discomfort. These areas can include but are not limited to video-surveilled areas, shopping malls, riot-proof architecture, uncomfortable street furniture etc.

You can add coordinates of places that make you feel uncomfortable to this project here…

I find it interesting that the aesthetic of the device so heavily references medical wearable materials, like bandages or splints. My first thought on seeing the picture was that the model had sustained some sort of spinal or ribcage injury.

Granted, this could just be a coincidence, especially since it’s apparently meant to be worn as underware.

Yeah, you’d definitely want to leverage existing medical orthotic technology so the only discomfort is the intentional hot/cold effect.

I wore a back-brace for several years (to reverse kyphosis, not for an injury) and it took a while for my skin to toughen up and adjust to the constant contact. You want it to be a firm, well-contoured fit so there’s no motion to chafe you.

Woah, you might want to be careful wearing that in public. Maybe it’s a sad thing that the first thing I think of when I see the above picture is a suicide bomber. The loose wires and cargo pants probably don’t help.
