The finished product is a custom laptop bag for an OLPC XO laptop computer, but these instructions could probably be modified for many portable electronic devices. The bag core is made of high density foam, reinforced with paperboard. The bag is trimmed in polyester belting, has an adjustable strap, and a parachute buckle closure.

a little young for a laptop don’t you think?
anyways, the bag looks great :)

  2. kyle says:

Rita – The XO laptop is the result of the OLPC (one laptop per child) program. It is designed for young kids.

It warms the heart to see many well-to-do Americans buying these laptops. The third world will just have to wait.

  4. jimminy says:

Hey thirdworld, the OLPC project is currently a buy-two-get-one deal. The second laptop is donated to a child in the… wait for it… thrid world. Perhaps you didn’t know that ;)

  5. blarg says:

i see thirdworld’s point. giving with a little taking. these are $200 machines. why not just donate all three?

  6. taketaketake says:

this is why a lot of mainstream efforts to support third world countries fail. you can’t expect everyone to empty their wallet for a foreign cause, and you chastise those who help in what way they can. the truth is *everyone* could be doing more, even you people who like to jump on forums and criticize people for not sending their paycheck to kenya. yes, thats right.. get on a plane and go to a third world country.

the point is- be happy with charity people are willing to give, because they don’t have to do it at all. when you start chanting ‘give give give’ all that makes people want to do is withdraw completely.

The third world is not buying these PCs in sufficient quantities to drive the price down to the $100 target. By selling more in the “first” world, the manufacturing quantities will rise and drive prices down. It also establishes a user base among better educated (well, maybe not in the US, what with intelligunt desine and all that) people who will write more apps that everyone can use. It’s like M$ in the early days (but not evil). Once you have a user base, people feel more confident about purchasing what the user base purchases and the whole thing feeds on itself. The user base grows because it exists. Then, if you’re M$ you obsolete older versions and file formats each time you create new versions and file formats so that that user base has to spend more money on your stuff. Oops. I forgot, this isn’t about M$…

    – XO’s are not being SOLD to the third world. They are being given away.
    – Operating System is Open Source, so “Upgrades” etc. are … open source.
