Flickr member davesbit built a globe by making a mold from a beach ball, and designed a map for it using The Generic Mapping Tools.

It looks very nice. I don’t know why, but I’ve always liked earth globes. I would like to have a “star globe” and a moon globe as well, but they are so expensive. This seems like a great way make one instead. Maybe you could add an arduino and motor to have it spin or light up certain parts from the inside etc. :)
It would be really neat to have a lamp inside that slowly rotates, representing the portion of the Earth in sunlight. The tricky part would be adjusting the angle to account for seasons.
