Listening to light on a drive thru NYC

Craft & Design Music Technology

Eric Archer takes us along on a ride through NYC at night – with soundtrack courtesy of photodiode-to-audio circuit.

The variety of sound produced may surprise you, considering how many of the light sources look so similar. Interestingly enough, some headlights end up sounding a lot like car/truck horns (keep an ear out for the tractor trailers). Not to be missed is the close encounter with a to truck around the 5m30s mark, and the ‘tunnel step sequencer’ @ ~7m30s. [via EricArcher.net]

An excellent piece of work! I’ve always been intrigued by the photophone circuit and this is a great extension of that basic design.
I’ll have to mess around with an Arduino and some photo diodes now. I think this could be used as a sensor for robotics.:)

    Keep up the great work.
