In the Maker Shed: Gakken SX-150

Music

The Gakken SX-150 has always been a really popular kit in the Maker Shed. We have posted a lot of projects that involve hacking and modifying of the SX-150. We’ve see Arduino controlled versions, fooling around with plasma, incredible analog cassette hacks, button mods, and more! Collin did a really nice video review too! Did you hack and mod your SX-150? Are you planning on it? Let us know in the comments. Thanks!

I removed the stylus and contact plate, and replaced them with a touch-activated 500mm ribbon. It’s very expressive (especially when I play it through a volume pedal, as in the video), and it’s certainly easier to hit those notes correctly than it is with my theremin.

Here’s the result of several hacks to the Gakken:

I got my Gakken @ makershed, and this project was pretty fun. The results are even more fun!

The Maker Shed is brought to you by Maker Media, the makers of MAKE Magazine, the Maker Faire, and much more.

Launched originally as a source for back issues of MAKE Magazine, the Maker Shed expanded rapidly to meet the demand for 'projects in a box,' otherwise known as kits. Now we have a little bit of everything for makers, crafters, and budding scientists, from Arduinos to sock monkeys to chemistry sets .
